We are first and foremost a group of professionals interested in sharing knowledge, experience and ideas, but we also value the chance to hear of and share great opportunities. Those of us who maintain the mailing list and Web site do our best to encourage this atmosphere and avoid those who view Refresh as a golden rolodex of candidates. But there are some good recruiters in Austin who have good opportunities and have proven that they care enough to find the right fit for the individual. We want to encourage those connections without taking our discussions off-topic or spamming those uninterested in jobs at that moment. So we’re modifying the way opportunities will be posted to the list.

New Job Posting List

From now on, all jobs, whether full time or contract work should be posted to Refresh Austin Jobs. Once you’ve joined that group, you can send opportunities to refresh-austin-jobs AT googlegroups DOT com.

Job Posting Guidelines

Anyone is allowed to join the new group and post opportunities (including recruiters). The first message from each member will be moderated, following our practice here on the main list, to ensure we maintain a high level of quality.

All job posts must meet these requirements:

The job opportunity must be in the Austin/Central Texas area. Telecommuting opportunities are acceptable as well, as long as the applicant may work from Austin.
The opportunity must be for a Web-related role (designer, developer, writer etc.), general positions such as office manager, secretary or chimney sweep should be posted elsewhere.
The post should include the real name of the company or individual hiring. It is understood that sometimes projects have not been announced yet, but a contact name should at least be included.
Do not post the same position day after day. Give it time before re-posting.

Seeing the Jobs

We’ll send a single daily digest to the main Refresh Austin list containing all job postings added that day, so it will be easy for members to see available jobs if they are interested or to filter the message if they aren’t. If you aren’t posting jobs, you don’t have to join the new list. We will also add the job posts to the Refresh Austin site as they come in, or you can choose to join the group to receive posts directly.

Following-Up on an Opportunity

Please contact the job poster off-list (both lists).

We hope this new system will encourage the sharing of jobs without overloading everyone’s inbox.

This is an experiment, so we would love to hear your feedback. We’ll tweak, modify or tear down as needed to ensure we get this right.

Refresh Austin Survey

News

refresh austin

survey

We’ve put together a quick survey to get your feedback about Refresh Austin. The site serves as the hub of our activities, unifying the different pieces of Refresh Austin. It’s easier than ever to join in, whether it’s by posting a new entry on this site, jumping into a discussion, adding photos to the Flickr group or setting up an event on Upcoming. Really busy, but want to stay up to date? Subscribe to the feed!

Participation

All members are encouraged to contribute to the site directly, extending our discussions beyond our meetings and mailing lists. Whether you want to post a follow-up to a meeting discussion, spread the word about a useful tool or application, post a job opportunity or encourage folks to meet you for a beer – the site is open to you.

How to Contribute

First, you need to register as a new member of the site. All new members start out as Contributors, which means that you can create a new post and edit any posts you’ve previously written, but the posts have to be approved before they are published. If you have come to a meeting, or have been active on the list you will be promoted to an Author, allowing you to publish without waiting for a review. We’ll try to stay on top of registrations, but feel free to drop us a line if you need to publish something quickly and are waiting on the account change!

This is a new set up for us, but we hope that it will allow everyone in the group to participate while holding the spammers at bay.

A Note About Posting Job Opportunities

Refresh Austin is a group for Web Professionals as such we encourage our members to share job openings. In order to post a job opening, we ask that you have participated in the group, either by attending a meeting or at the very least by introducing yourself on the mailing list.

Recruiters: This is not a venue for you to post jobs – this site and the mailing list are for our members.

Questions, Suggestions or General Feedback

This is a fresh start, as such we want to hear what you think! You can add a comment below, send your thoughts via the contact page or respond on the mailing list – we’ll do our best to add them to the mix!
